Smoking Ceremony

Gather at the Rotunda in the main street on Friday at 6:40pm and join a procession of Pipers, Drummers, and Dancers, along with school children from Portarlington, as they make their way to the Fire Pit for the Smoking Ceremony lead by Wadawurrung elder Uncle Bryon Powell. The gathering brings together the elements of fire, water, air, and earth significant in both, Indigenous and Celtic cultures and the Smoking Ceremony offers a cleansing of the mind, body and place.

Those gathered will then move in to Parks Hall for the Official Opening. Uncle Bryon will welcome us to country; Festival Director Una McAlinden will welcome us all to the 2018 festival; followed by an address from City of Greater Geelong. Then settle in and relax into what will be a wonderful opening concert.

The spirit of the House of Song is about encouraging people to sing traditional songs – in their many forms. Generally speaking, the focus will be on unaccompanied singing. It is not a stage performance, but rather the House of Song is a place for sharing songs and singing, or you may prefer to join in with other singers or simply listen. The House of Song invites all to experience the tradition of singing and to appreciate traditional song.
