Victoria's top Highland Bagpipe players showcasing a Piobareachd concert (narration and performance explaining the stories behind the tunes) and the National Celtic Festival Piping Recital Challenge.
Piobaireachd Concert - Gaelic for piping and sometimes called the ‘Classical Music’ of the Great Highland Bagpipe.
This program explores Piobaireachd composed by the legendary MacCrimmon family of Skye. Spanning 300 years they were the hereditary pipers to the MacLeods of Dunvegan, composing some of the most beautiful and emotive music for bagpipes ever conceived, giving rise to a Golden Age of Piping.

National Celtic Festival Piping Challenge
Recognising the influence of legendary Scottish piper Gordon Duncan, we’ve invited 4 of Australia’s premier solo pipers to compete in a 15 minute piping challenge playing tunes written by Gordon, to win the 2019 National Celtic Festival Piping Challenge. Fingers flying, music flowing, this is Australia’s piping at its best. The four pipers are:
Shannon has been a playing member of the Moorabbin City Pipe Band for 7 years, in both grade 1 and grade 2, recently winning the Victorian Pipe Band Championships in grade 2 , competing in solo piping competitions since 2011 (nationally and internationally). She won the Victorian Solo Piping Championships in B grade, and RU Brown Silver medal and Victorian Pipers Association Silver medal. Recent success Silver Medal Piobaireachd Competition in New Zealand.
Jamie is a global piper having competed regularly in Scotland, New Zealand and Australia in Solo Piping and Pipe Bands. His record is impressive having won; the NZ Gold Medal Piobaireachd and Former Winners Clasp, NZ Silver Chanter MSR and Former Winners Clasp, RU Brown Adelaide Gold Medal. Jamie is pipe Major of the Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band and 2017 winner of the National Celtic Festival Piping Challenge.
Josh is the Pipe major of Old Haileyburyian Association Pipes and Drums and is also a member of Canterbury Caledonian Society based in Christchurch New Zealand, one of the top 10 Pipe Bands in the world. Josh is an A grade competitor and one of Australia’s most exciting emerging talents, having won every section at the 2017 Victoria Solo Piping along with the VPA Silver Medal, The New Zealand Silver Chanter and also competed in the 2017 Pipe Idol at Piping Live, Scotland.
Ian has been involved in piping for 40 years and is the winner of 7 Grade 1 World Pipe Band Championships. He has played with some of the World's top pipe bands such as The Pipes & Drums of the Royal Ulster Constabulary from Northern Ireland, The Victoria Police Pipe Band, the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band from Toronto, Canada and he currently plays with the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band from Northern Ireland. Ian has also won and placed in many solo piping contests globally.

GEELONG RSL PIPE BAND
Geelong RSL Pipes and Drums was formed in July 2002 and is Geelong's only competing pipe band. Geelong RSL Pipes and Drums first entered the competition arena at Ballarat in February 2003.
You will recognize the band in their Red Robertson Tartan - then will join us on Saturday.
Band members will pop up throughout the week-end for small band perfromances.
Recently formed local Pipe band, Kilter will appear across the week-end. This enthusiastic group will be found in a range of spaces and settings.
CELTIC PIPING CLUB
The Celtic Piping Club celebrates the best of Irish and Scottish bagpipe music with tunes played on uillean pipes, Scottish smallpipes, border pipes, flutes and whistles. Accompanied by harp and piano, pipers from across Vic and SA will perform together a selection of jigs, reels, polkas, marches and airs. Featuring traditional to contemporary tunes from Ireland, Scotland & Australia, these pipers are crossing musical boundaries and showcasing a rich musical melting pot.

Drumming Mad – DrumWorx Workshop
Our ever popular "Come and Try" workshop will feature at this year’s festival. This workshop has been developed by one of our leaders Dean Hall and suits all ages. We will have you playing your first wee score by the end!
Scott Birrell will lead this workshops - Scott is a professional drum tutor and degree graduate in Scottish Traditional Music. Scott has won every grade one RSPBA title and goes back again this year to play with Scottish Power Pipe Band.
Scott will be ably assisted by DrumWorx stalwart and co-founder Pete Moir.
